Intelligent fastening solution and a super sports car

Porsche Spyder 918

The Porsche 918 Spyder is an impressive vehicle from Porsche. With almost 900 hp, the sports car accelerates to 200 km / h in 7.7 seconds and then continues to the top speed of 345 km / h.

Another number is no less impressive: thanks to a hybrid drive and the lightweight carbon construction, the technology miracle consumes just 3 liters per 100 kilometers.

Expertise in product developmentPorsche Spyder 918

With high-tech projects in particular, the manufacturer's overall productivity largely depends on how efficiently he has organized his production.

But not only that: What also matters is how productive the previous product development is and how quickly optimal solutions can be found for problems that arise. This in turn presupposes that the suppliers and partners in particular also think along and actively contribute their skills to product development.

Bossard and KVT-Fastening are such partners for the sports car manufacturer Porsche when it comes to demanding questions about fastening technology.

For example, in the past, when the Porsche development department contacted us about a project that was still secret at the time. The engineers were looking for fastening solutions for a completely new vehicle that would consist largely of carbon structures.

Carbon is a very interesting material for vehicle construction: it is very light and at the same time has a high level of strength. Less weight means less fuel consumption.

In terms of fastening technology, however, molded parts made of carbon are a real challenge: They cannot be drilled, as such a destruction of the structure would impair the strength of the material. Conventional fastening such as rivets, threaded inserts or press-in bolts are therefore out of the question.

bigHead® for carbon

bigHead PortfolioBecause the project was still very secret at the time, we only received the most necessary information. But these were enough for our developers to come up with the perfect solution for Porsche's problem: so-called bigHead® parts.

As the name suggests, in contrast to screws with conventional drives (e.g. nuts, bolts and bushes), such fasteners have a large head, which makes it possible to glue or laminate the fastening parts.

This gave us fixed screw-on points which - compared to standard fasteners - can neither be torn off nor torn out and can be attached simply and quickly.

And, just as important for Porsche, the lightweight carbon chassis remains intact, despite around 30 to 50 fastening areas. In this way it can fully exploit its strength - the high strength.

I think we can proudly say that we were able to make a significant contribution to ensuring that Porsche is also at the forefront in connection technology.
